JOEL DOUGLAS
Raised in Friday Harbor and Bellingham. Joel raised chickens and was active in FFA, played basketball, and was involved in choir. The first truck he bought for himself was a 1936 blue International Harvester.
Joel attended Aurora U, Seattle U, and the University of Washington with a focus on economics, real estate, and engineering. Joel has had an appreciation and interest in historical preservation and agriculture from a young age.
Douglas served on boards for the local water district, condominium, city appeals task force, Republican County Boards, and Precinct Committees. He has been a candidate for Public office and was recognized as Whatcom County 1996 Republican of the Year. He has served on private corporation boards and as a business consultant on several government contracts. He was active for 26 years and served as President of the Western Washington & British Columbia Conference of Advent Christian Churches for four years. Joel Douglas is a member of six Historical and Architectural Societies and has served on the Directory Board of the State of Washington Historical Society.
Joel Douglas [Pacific Resources, Inc. ] was awarded a commendation letter for his action in taking a controversial stand in saving the San Juan Island County Courthouse.
Judge Patrick had sued to have it condemned. Douglas took on the restoration contract and documented engineer quality coverage that was concealed. Pacific Resources, Inc. restored all surfaces and assisted in bringing the case to a vote of the public. The initial cleanup project was funded by Pacific Resources, Inc. and The Lairmont Manor Foundation.
Joel with [Pacific Resources, Inc. ] Worked on restoration and placement of the Vashon Ferry on the state architectural list - the 1927 Ferry Museum for service in the San Juans for 40 years.
Joel worked with the Fairhaven Village Task Force and the National Registry of Historical Places. Instituted National Historic recognition to Fairhaven Village and contributed to street lighting, pillars, planters, and memorial flag pole.
Joel worked on the preservation and restoration and State Historic List placement of the Tabernacle and Nooksack Campgrounds in Nooksack, WA
Joel and Barbara purchased and restored The Larrabee Estate in 1968, now Lairmont Manor. The Lairmont Manor Foundation is now maintained as a community and event venue.
Joel’s served in the military from approximately 1963 to 1973. Captain in the International Military Police and Military Government and Reserve duty. He was the commander of recognized companies that received Division awards for outstanding service to their countries. Joel was Assistant Provost Marshal for Yakima Training Center and Fort Gordon, Georgia. Upon returning from active duty, he began work as an insurance adjuster.
Joel and Barbara (Nick) married in 1964 and began acquiring property as investments for fix-up and repair. Since then they have acquired, managed, restored, and built Hotels, Condominiums, Apartments, Storage, Commercial Warehouses, and single-family housing.
BARBARA DOUGLAS
Barbara was born and raised on Beacon Hill in Seattle and attended Cleveland High School. Her first job was at a Calendar Factory at age 14. Barb graduated from WWU with degrees in education and economics and became a teacher after graduation.
In 1965 Barb and Joel together began to develop Harbor Lands Co., Barbara worked each day with Joel, advising, visiting project sites, managing projects, investment planning, designing plans, handling finances, staffing, training, and operations on all Harbor Lands Co. developments
Additionally, Barbara has managed the family's farm, and home, and raised 3 children. Barbara is active in Bible Study Fellowship. She is an excellent tennis player and an avid football fan. Barb enjoys traveling, running the dogs on the beach, and hanging out with her grandsons.
